Founded by John Dusek at the turn of the century, Thalia Hall became one of the most prominent community halls in the Chicago area. Since 1892, this architectural beauty has housed commercial storefronts, residential housing, and has served as a meeting hall and entertainment center.

Thalia Hall was built by John Dusek with the hopes of bringing arts and entertainment from Bohemia to play for his bohemian neighbors… Thalia existed as one of the most ornate theaters of its time. This opulence, which differentiated it from more traditional interior theaters, was granted landmark status in 1985.

Fun Facts about Thalia Hall

• Thalia Hall’s ornate architecture was inspired by Prague opera house. The cut-stone front was manufactured with Bedford limestone and rock-faced masonry.
• Most large commercial buildings in that era cost around $50,000 to build, however, Thalia Hall ran a whopping $145,000 to construct in comparison. By 1902, John Dusek was broke, with outstanding liabilities for around $25,000 and only around $200 in his personal savings.
• The windows to the hall were adjustable via a shutter system to match the mood and setting for whatever events were going on inside. Those original shutters are still intact today.
